Man O’ War Bay Training Centre which later became known as
Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre is a product of Outward Bound type
of Education developed by late Dr Kurt Hahn, a German who later naturalized as
a Briton.
He founded the 1st Outward Bound School in
Aberdovey, Wales in 1941. Ten years later, late Dr Alec Dickson, a Briton whose
special interest was Community Development founded the Man O’ War Bay Training
Centre in 1951 in Victoria, Southern Cameroon. It was given a legal status by
an ordinance published in the extra ordinary Gazette No 45 of 10th
August, 1960 and modified by Decree No 38 of December, 1989.
The Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre, an affiliate
member of the Outward Bound Organization World Wide which exist in over fifty
Countries of the World is the first in Africa and number two in the World.s
The Centre has trained more than 7 million Nigerians from
all works of life since its inception 56years ago. The centre is an informal
Educational Institution. It uses the challenges found in the environment to
confront participants for the purpose of developing the core values of Courage,
Trust, Integrity and Compassion for others.
In order to actualize the development of these core values,
the centre incorporates the following into its training programs:
-
Character development
-
Adventure and Challenge
-
Compassion and Service
-
Social and Environmental Responsibility
Schools and institutions have had privilege of getting their
students enjoy the training curricula of Citizenship and Leadership Centers
across the Country. In my University days, we participated actively in
NUMOWCHIN (National Union of Man O’ War Clubs In Higher Institution of Nigeria)
am umbrella body of Man O’ War Clubs in
Higher institutions in Nigeria, the trainings that members passed through have
remain helpful to them either Men or Other Men
alike in their various endeavours of life today. I am planning to do a
study on “Benefits of Citizenship and Leadership Training in Current Day
Nigeria” For those who have had the privilege and honour to Share the
experience, the journey of self discovery, confidence and compassion for others
is the key to volunteerism, a spirit which is lacking in our present day
Nigeria. Self discipline is lacking amongst youths today. I urge patriots who
have had these training to polish themselves and be useful where ever they are.
If you still do your routine exercise like the “morning tea” which I still
enjoy very much till date after my usual morning jogging, you will be active
and smart in whatever area of life you are involve.
Don’t give up
the skill, Man O’ War Wee!!

The practice
of fasting has been with man from a long time. Religious groups have exploited
the principles of fasting to enrich individuals spiritually. In this article, I
will attempt to highlight some medical benefits of fasting.
Fasting is
an effective and safe method of helping the body detoxifies. Fasting is
recommended for some illness, as it gives the body the rest it needs for
recovery. Acute illness like colon disorders, allergies respiratory diseases
are most responsive to fasting, while chronic degenerative diseases are the
list responsive. Relieving the body of the work of food digestion, fasting
permits the system to rid itself of toxins while facilitating healing.
Apart from
benefits of fasting in times of poor health, regular fasting give all the body
organs a rest and help reverse the aging process and ensure a longer and
healthier life. The following takes place in the body during fasting:
1. The natural process of toxin
excretion continues, while the influx of new toxins is reduced hence total body
toxicity is reduced.
2. The immune system’s work load is
greatly reduced and the digestive tract is spared any inflammation due to
allergic reactions to food.
3. The energy usually used for digestion
is redirected to immune function, cell growth and eliminatory processes.
4. Tissue oxygenation is increased and
white blood cells are moved more efficiently due to a lowering of serum fats
that thins the blood.
5. Physical awareness and sensitivity to
diet and surroundings are increased.
Due to these
effects of fasting, a fast can help healing with greater speed, cleanse the
liver, kidneys, and colon, help one lose weight and water, flush out toxins,
clear the eyes and tongue. Depending on the length of fast, different purposes
area accomplished:
a. Three days fast helps the body rid
itself of toxins and cleanse the blood.
b. Five days fast begins the process of
healing and rebuilding the immune system.
c. Ten days fast can take care of many problems
before the arise and help to fight off illness.
Precaution to be taken during fasting
-
Do
not fast on water alone, this is because water alone fast releases toxins too
quickly, causing headaches, instead use juice which removes toxins and promotes
healing by supplying the body with vitamins, minerals and enzymes.
-
For
a person with diabetes or any chronic health condition, fasting should be done
under supervision or consultation with a health care professional.
-
As
a general rule, one should not combine fruit and vegetable juices. Apples are
the only fruit that should be added to vegetable juices.
-
The
size of the stomach and the amount of secreted digestive juices may decrease
during fasting hence the first meals after a fast should be frequent and small.
-
Do
not chew gum while on the fast, the digestive process starts when chewing
prompts the body to secrete enzymes into the gastrointestinal tract. If there
is no food in the stomach, ulcerative stress could occur.
-
During
a fast, as toxins are released from the body, one will probably experience a
coated tongue and an unpleasant taste in the mouth. To relieve this anomaly,
rinse the mouth with fresh lemon juice.

LESSONS FROM THE FIRST AFRICAN DIABETES CONGRESS FIRST SCIENTIFIC SESSION ARUSHA- TANZANIA

LESSONS FROM THE FIRST AFRICAN DIABETES CONGRESS FIRST
SCIENTIFIC SESSION ARUSHA-
TANZANIA
The first African Diabetes Congress that was much expected
has eventually come and gone. There is however, a message that was conveyed to
everyone who came, that Africa needs to move
forward in area of health needs and policy formulation to cater for those
living with chronic complications like Diabetes and other NCDs.
Area of advocacy,
foot disease management, Education, accessories amongst other needs are lacking
in Africa. Though there are efforts from the
East/South African block which must be commended, other zones needs to
integrate health systems to deliver on managing these conditions.
At the Congress, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF)
presented the noble work it does with other partners to project Diabetes
Education which is a rudiment of Diabetes Self management practice. The IDF use
of Diabetes Conversation Map Education tool in most African Countries has
brought revolution in Diabetes Education and they must be commended and
supported especially by Ministries of Health of different Countries of Africa.
One of the main issue that was left unaddressed or will I
say left aside but important is the issue of FUNDING. Why did everyone shy away from this issue? Though at the
sidelines of different committee work and presentation, we all know Funding is
an important ingredient to drive the change in Diabetes management and care for
people living with Diabetes.
The most emotional part of the Congress was when Children
with Type 1 Diabetes from across Africa and
beyond presented a song “WE ARE THE WORLD”. The Whole Crowd including the vice
President of the Republic of Tanzania Dr M. Bilal, saw clearly the damage
Diabetes has caused and it is still on
the move as you read this article, with 4.6 million persons loosing their lives
yearly.
With all these challenges, what should be done must be
collective for synergy is a requirement in managing a chronic disorder. The
Government of Countries in Africa must look
inward to see how their health Ministries can use the power of synergy to
collaborate with NGO’s working in area of Diabetes to help build capacity
within the health system. Standardization of care with use of treatment
guidelines and support of research and outreach programs integrated into
primary care centers.
The plight of children living with type1Diabetes is a matter
of urgent attention by everybody. Those who can sponsor with their resources or
donate time to help control the menace diabetes is causing the little children,
who must be on daily insulin usage for the rest of their lives. The procurement
of these products is better imagine, costly, non availability, the list is long.
The obstacles to manage type1 diabetes are enormous.
This is to introduce a forth coming programme: “DIABETES YOUTH CAMP FOR CHILDREN LIVING
WITH DIABETES”. It will be a 3 day camp where children will be exposed to
professionals from across the globe. They will help the children to plan their
management of Diabetes. Self empowerment schemes will be taught as income
generation is important because the parents of these children cannot withstand
all it takes to control Diabetes. Hence if you are a young person living with
Diabetes between ages 2 to 20 years, you can send your nomination to iakogu@yahoo.com or nkiruoradiegwu@yahoo.com, (Nigeria)
to participate in this program.
The DIABETES YOUTH
CAMP program has been shown from research to impact a life time impression and
encouragement to any child. There is a feeling and state of readiness to take
control of Diabetes after the camp that most children leave with every day of
their lives, in the difficult challenges of making choices of healthy eating to
control the glucose level.
I am happy for the exposure most professionals who attended
the First scientific session of the African Diabetes Congress had to network
with one another. It is my desire and hope that the commitments to bring about
the change in Diabetes Care in Africa will be sustained with results when we
meet in Cameroon.
The Election of new officers to manage the affairs of IDF Africa region from
2013 was the height of it all. The new leadership is committed to move the
gains recorded forward.
The African Diabetes Congress is a wake up call on
Professionals and other organizations working around Diabetes to come together
and harmonize their effort and research. The Federal Ministries of health in Nigeria
needs to collaborate with NGO’s like Diabetes Association of Nigeria and others
working in similar area to roll out DIABETES
CONVERSATION MAP PROJECT to all parts of the Country and training of health
care Professionals on current dynamics in management of Diabetes in Children
and Adults.
